Ground beef with onion sauce is a comforting and traditional dish from the Southern United States: flavorful ground beef patties simmered in a rich, smooth onion sauce that seems to have been cooking all day. Simple, hearty, and deeply satisfying, it’s the kind of meal that brings everyone together around the table without a word. One bite and you feel right at home.
Ingredients
450g minced beef
80ml breadcrumbs
1 egg
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
2 tbsp oil or butter
For the onion sauce:
1 large onion, finely chopped
2 tbsp butter
2 tbsp all-purpose flour
500ml beef stock
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
Salt and black pepper to taste
Directions
In a bowl, combine the minced beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper until well blended.
Form into 4 oval patties.
Heat the oil or butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
Brown the patties for 3 to 4 minutes per side. Remove and set aside.
In the same skillet, melt the butter and add the sliced onions.
Cook the onions until softened and golden brown, stirring frequently.
Sprinkle with flour and stir to coat the onions well.
Cook for 1 minute, then slowly whisk in the beef broth.
Add the Worcestershire sauce and season with salt and pepper.
Bring to a simmer until the sauce thickens.
Return the patties to the skillet.
Cover and simmer for 10 to 15 minutes, until the patties are cooked through and coated in sauce.
